Michigan vs. Michigan State fight: 'Disappointing' clash breaks out after Wolverines win
Postgame skirmish mars rivalry between instate foes
Police investigate and seek charges but no arrests made
A "disappointing" postgame skirmish broke out between the University of Michigan and Michigan State University football teams after the Wolverines beat the Spartans 29-7 on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022.
The incident occurred on the field at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, as the two teams were shaking hands following the game. Video footage shows several players from both teams pushing and shoving each other, and at one point, a Michigan player appears to strike a Michigan State player in the helmet.
University of Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel called the incident "unacceptable" and said the school will cooperate with the Big Ten Conference and local law enforcement in their investigations.
"We will take appropriate disciplinary action against any student-athlete who is found to have violated our athletic department policies or the Big Ten Conference rules," Manuel said in a statement.
Michigan State athletic director Alan Haller also condemned the incident, saying it "does not represent the values of our university or our football program."
"We will cooperate fully with the Big Ten Conference and local law enforcement in their investigations and will take appropriate disciplinary action against any student-athlete who is found to have violated our athletic department policies or the Big Ten Conference rules," Haller said in a statement.
The Big Ten Conference has announced that it is reviewing the incident and will take appropriate disciplinary action.
The Ann Arbor Police Department is also investigating the incident and has said that it is seeking charges against those involved. No arrests have been made at this time.
The postgame skirmish is the latest in a series of incidents involving the two schools. In 2019, a Michigan State player was suspended for his role in a tunnel brawl with Michigan players after the game.
The rivalry between Michigan and Michigan State is one of the most intense in college football. The two schools are located just 70 miles apart and have a long history of competing for the Paul Bunyan Trophy.
The latest incident is a reminder that even in the most heated rivalries, sportsmanship must prevail.
