How coordinator Liam Coen must rebuild the Bucs offense
The Buccaneers offense struggled mightily in 2022, finishing 28th in the NFL in points per game. New offensive coordinator Liam Coen will have his work cut out for him in 2023 as he looks to turn things around.
Here are some of the things Coen will need to do to rebuild the Bucs offense:
- Establish a strong running game. The Bucs were one of the worst running teams in the NFL in 2022, averaging just 3.4 yards per carry. Coen will need to find a way to get the running game going in order to take some of the pressure off of Tom Brady.
- Improve the offensive line. The Bucs offensive line was a major liability in 2022, allowing 55 sacks. Coen will need to find a way to improve the pass protection and open up some running lanes for the running backs.
- Get more production from the wide receivers. The Bucs wide receivers were a major disappointment in 2022, failing to produce a single 1,000-yard receiver. Coen will need to find a way to get more production from the wide receivers, especially with the departure of Chris Godwin.
- Develop a more creative play-calling scheme. The Bucs offense was very predictable in 2022, which made it easy for defenses to stop. Coen will need to develop a more creative play-calling scheme that will keep defenses guessing.
- Build a strong relationship with Tom Brady. Coen will need to build a strong relationship with Tom Brady in order to get the most out of him. Brady is a veteran quarterback who knows what he wants, and Coen will need to be able to adjust his offense to fit Brady's style of play.
Rebuilding the Bucs offense will not be an easy task, but Coen is a talented coach with a proven track record of success. If he can implement these changes, the Bucs offense could be much improved in 2023.
