Zhenis beat Ordabasy in dramatic cup match
Zhenis continue impressive start to season with battling victory
Zhenis needed extra time to beat a dogged Ordabasy side in the Kazakhstan Cup and set up a quarter final clash with Aktobe.
Zhenis came from behind twice to claim a 4-2 victory in an eventful last-16 tie in front of their own fans at the Astana Arena on Wednesday.
The visitors, Ordabasy, took a shock early lead thanks to a 4th minute penalty from Bauyrzhan Turysbek.
Zhenis responded well and were level just 10 minutes later when Togzhan Amankeldiyev's header from a corner kick found the back of the net.
Ordabasy restored their advantage through Elzhas Altynbekov in the 26th minute, but the hosts hit back again before the break through a stunning 30-yard strike from Daniil Penkov.
The match remained in the balance after the break, with both sides creating chances. But neither could find a winner in normal time, so the game went into extra time.
Zhenis took the lead for the first time in the match just four minutes into extra time when Alikhan Askaruly converted a penalty. And the hosts made sure of the victory with a fourth goal from substitute Mirzhan Turysbek in the 117th minute.
The win means Zhenis will face Aktobe in the quarter finals of the Kazakhstan Cup. The match will be played on April 5th at the Central Stadium in Aktobe.
