Werder snatch draw against league leaders Bayer Leverkusen
Ten-man Werder Bremen came from behind to snatch a 2-2 draw against Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, ending the visitors' seven-game winning streak.
Despite playing with 10 men for more than an hour, Bremen showed great determination and resilience to earn a share of the spoils.
Bayer Leverkusen took the lead through Nadiem Amiri in the 18th minute however Bremen equalised through Leonardo Bittencourt just before the break.
Leverkusen regained the lead through Moussa Diaby in the 53rd minute but Bremen refused to give up and equalised again through Davie Selke in the 77th minute.
The draw leaves Leverkusen top of the table with 23 points from 10 games, while Bremen move up to 10th place with 14 points.
Bremen's resilience
Bremen were forced to play with 10 men from the 29th minute after Jean-Manuel Mbom was sent off for a second yellow card.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Bremen showed great resilience and determination to fight back and earn a point.
Their equaliser in the 77th minute was a moment of great quality, as Selke controlled a long ball with his chest before volleying home.
Leverkusen's missed opportunity
Bayer Leverkusen will be disappointed not to have taken all three points from the game.
They had the better chances throughout the game and were in control for large periods.
However, they failed to take their chances and were ultimately punished by Bremen's resilience.
What next?
Bayer Leverkusen will be looking to bounce back from this draw when they face Borussia Dortmund next weekend.
Bremen, meanwhile, will be hoping to build on this result when they face Hertha Berlin next weekend.
