Florala vs. Elba: The Extra Point

Elba Panthers looking to build off 2022 record of 4-6

At 4:30 pm on August 25th 2023, the Elba Tigers will make their way to Florala High School to take on the Wildcats in their 2023 football season opener. The Panthers are coming off of a 4-6 season in 2022. The Elba Tigers finished their 2022 season with an overall record of 2-8.

Florala improved on offense under Head Coach Chris Mason.

Head Coach Chris Mason is entering his second year with the Panthers, and in his first season, the team improved their scoring average by 17 points per game. Last season, the Panthers put up 31.3 points per game and allowed 32.8 points per game.

Key offensive players for the Panthers in 2023 are Junior Quarterback Michael Merchant, Senior Running Back Vincent Boatwright, and Sophomore Wide Receiver Zymarion Chapman. Merchant lead the Panthers offense with 1,950 passing yards and 23 passing touchdowns in 2022.

Elba Tigers look to improve under new leadership

Elba enters the 2023 season with new leadership under first-year Head Coach Chris Wilson. Wilson was previously the coach at Opp High School, where he went 23-27 in four seasons leading the Bobcats program.

The Elba Tigers bring back several key players from last year's team, including Senior Quarterback Isaac Starling, Senior Running Back Chris Hines, and Junior Wide Receiver Trey Brown. Elba scored 26.9 points per game and allowed 39.6 points per game in 2022.

Panthers and Tigers set to open 2023 season

With both teams looking to improve on their 2022 records, the Florala Wildcats and Elba Tigers are set to open their 2023 football seasons against each other on August 25th, 2023 at Florala High School.
