Mississippi State football clobbers Texas A&M in Mike Elko debut
Bulldogs dominate Aggies in first game under new head coach
STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State football made a resounding statement in its first game under new head coach Mike Elko, dismantling Texas A&M 42-24 on Saturday night at Davis Wade Stadium. The Bulldogs put together a dominant performance on both sides of the ball, limiting the Aggies to just 249 yards of total offense while piling up 495 of their own.
Offense explodes for 495 yards, five touchdowns
Mississippi State's offense was clicking on all cylinders, led by quarterback Will Rogers. The sophomore completed 31 of 48 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for a team-high 75 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs' running game was also solid, with Jo'quavious Marks leading the way with 66 yards on 13 carries. Dillon Johnson added 61 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
Mississippi State scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and never looked back. The Bulldogs led 28-10 at halftime and extended their lead to 35-10 in the third quarter.
Defense shines in Elko's debut
Mississippi State's defense was equally impressive, holding Texas A&M to just 249 yards of total offense. The Aggies were held to just 67 yards rushing and 182 yards passing.
The Bulldogs' defense also forced three turnovers, including two interceptions from cornerback Emmanuel Forbes.
The Aggies' only touchdown came on a 2-yard run by Devon Achane in the fourth quarter. Achane finished the game with 65 yards on 13 carries.
What's next for Mississippi State and Texas A&M?
Mississippi State (1-0) will host Arizona next Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium. Texas A&M (0-1) will host Appalachian State next Saturday at Kyle Field.
