Vaping-related lung injuries spike in St. Petersburg
Health officials in St. Petersburg are warning residents about a recent spike in vaping-related lung injuries.
Since the beginning of the year, there have been 12 confirmed cases of e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) in the city. This is more than double the number of cases reported during the same period last year.
The majority of EVALI cases have been reported in young people and adults under the age of 25. Symptoms of EVALI can include shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In some cases, EVALI can lead to severe lung damage and even death.
The exact cause of EVALI is still unknown, but it is believed to be linked to the use of e-cigarettes or vaping products that contain THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. THC can damage the lungs and make them more susceptible to infection. Vitamin E acetate, a cutting agent often added to illicit THC vaping products, has also been linked to EVALI.
Health officials are urging residents to avoid using e-cigarettes or vaping products, especially those that contain THC. If you experience any symptoms of EVALI, you should seek medical attention immediately.
Here are some tips to help you avoid EVALI:
- Avoid using e-cigarettes or vaping products, especially those that contain THC.
- If you do use e-cigarettes or vaping products, only use products from reputable brands.
- Never buy e-cigarettes or vaping products from the street or from unknown sources.
- Be aware of the symptoms of EVALI and seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
