A look at the four players who were most culpable for Real Madrid's humiliating defeat
Real Madrid were comprehensively beaten 4-0 at home by Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday, with Carlo Ancelotti's side putting in a performance that was well below their usual standards.
Several players were below par for Los Blancos, but four were particularly culpable for the defeat.
1. David Alaba
The Austrian defender was at fault for Barcelona's opening goal, as he was caught out of position by Ousmane Dembele and then failed to track the Frenchman's run into the box.
Alaba also struggled to deal with the pace and movement of Barcelona's forwards throughout the game, and was eventually substituted in the second half.
2. Ferland Mendy
The French left-back was another player who had a poor game, as he was repeatedly caught out of position by Barcelona's attackers.
Mendy also struggled to provide any attacking threat going forward, and was eventually replaced by Eduardo Camavinga in the second half.
3. Toni Kroos
The German midfielder was uncharacteristically poor in possession, and was also guilty of giving the ball away in dangerous areas on several occasions.
Kroos also struggled to keep up with the pace of the game, and was eventually replaced by Luka Modric in the second half.
4. Karim Benzema
The French striker was well below his best, and failed to provide any kind of attacking threat for Real Madrid.
Benzema was also guilty of missing a number of good chances, and was eventually substituted in the second half.
These four players were the most culpable for Real Madrid's humiliating defeat to Barcelona, and will need to improve their performances if Los Blancos are to challenge for the La Liga title this season.
