A 72-year-old pedestrian has died after being hit by a car in Slavyansk-na-Kubani, Russia. The incident occurred on Friday, September 2023 at 6 pm on Gazeta Street.

The victim, Zarya Kubani, was crossing the road when she was struck by a Hyundai Solaris driven by a 60-year-old man. Kubani suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where she later died.

The driver of the car was detained at the scene and is being questioned by police. Investigators determined that the driver failed to give way to Kubani as she crossed the road, resulting in the fatal collision.

The Main Directorate for Traffic Safety is investigating the accident. A spokesperson for the department said that the driver could face charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

This is the second fatal pedestrian accident in Slavyansk-na-Kubani this year. In January, a 10-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a car on Slavyansky Prospekt.

The pedestrian death toll on Russian roads has been rising in recent years. According to the World Health Organization, there were 32,411 pedestrian fatalities in Russia in 2019 - an increase of 10% compared to 2018.
