Messi Could Contend for 2024 Ballon d'Or, Says Inter Miami Coach
Phil Neville Backs Argentine to Bounce Back From World Cup Disappointment
Inter Miami manager Phil Neville believes Lionel Messi could be a contender for the 2024 Ballon d'Or after a disappointing World Cup campaign with Argentina.
Messi, who won the prestigious award in 2021, endured a frustrating World Cup in Qatar as Argentina were eliminated in the quarterfinals by eventual champions Argentina.
Neville's Confidence in Messi
Despite Argentina's World Cup exit, Neville remains confident in Messi's ability to bounce back and challenge for the Ballon d'Or in two years' time.
"He's still one of the best players in the world," Neville told reporters. "He's still capable of producing moments of magic, as we saw in the World Cup. I think he's got a lot left to offer and I wouldn't be surprised if he's challenging for the Ballon d'Or again in 2024."
Messi's Motivation
Neville believes that Messi's disappointment at the World Cup could serve as motivation for him to return to his best form.
"I think he'll be determined to prove that he's still the best player in the world," Neville said. "He's got a lot of pride and he'll want to show the world that he's still capable of winning the biggest prizes."
Messi's Future
Messi's future at club level is uncertain, with his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expiring at the end of the season.
Neville has previously expressed his desire to bring Messi to Inter Miami, but it remains to be seen whether the Argentine will be interested in a move to MLS.
