Men warned on winter hat risks
Cold weather can lead to baldness, doctors say
Men who brave the cold without wearing a hat could be putting their hair at risk, doctors have warned.
Extreme cold can cause the blood vessels in the scalp to constrict, which can lead to hair loss.
Dr. David Jack, a consultant dermatologist at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, said: "When the temperature drops, the blood vessels in the scalp constrict in order to keep the body warm. This can lead to a reduction in the blood supply to the hair follicles, which can cause hair loss.
"In most cases, this hair loss is temporary and the hair will grow back once the weather warms up. However, in some cases, it can lead to permanent hair loss."
Dr. Jack advised men to wear a hat when the temperature drops below freezing.
Other risks of not wearing a hat in winter
In addition to hair loss, not wearing a hat in winter can also lead to other health problems, such as:
- Hypothermia
- Frostbite
- Meningitis
Hypothermia is a condition that occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it. Symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, confusion, and loss of consciousness.
Frostbite is a condition that occurs when the skin and underlying tissues freeze. Symptoms of frostbite include numbness, pain, and swelling.
Meningitis is a serious infection of the membranes that line the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of meningitis include headache, fever, and stiff neck.
How to choose a winter hat
When choosing a winter hat, it is important to choose one that is made from a warm material, such as wool or fleece. The hat should also fit snugly around the head to keep the heat in.
