Freiburg 1-3 Leipzig: Nkunku brace helps Leipzig move top of the Bundesliga
Augsburg stun Borussia Dortmund to boost survival hopes
RB Leipzig moved top of the Bundesliga on Saturday, December 17, thanks to a 3-1 victory over Freiburg. Christopher Nkunku scored twice for Leipzig, with Dominik Szoboszlai also on the scoresheet. Freiburg had taken the lead through Michael Gregoritsch but were unable to hold on.
The victory moved Leipzig two points clear of Bayern Munich, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Union Berlin. It is the first time Leipzig have topped the Bundesliga since September 2021.
Freiburg, meanwhile, remain fourth in the table, four points behind Leipzig.
Leipzig took the lead in the 17th minute through Nkunku, who fired home from close range after being set up by Szoboszlai. Freiburg equalized in the 34th minute through Gregoritsch, who headed home from a corner.
Leipzig regained the lead in the 56th minute through Szoboszlai, who scored with a fine long-range effort. Nkunku then sealed the victory for Leipzig in the 73rd minute, scoring his second of the game.
Augsburg boosted their survival hopes with a shock 1-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund. Fredrik Jensen scored the only goal of the game in the 60th minute.
The victory moved Augsburg five points clear of the relegation zone. Dortmund, meanwhile, remain in sixth place, six points behind Leipzig.
Dortmund were without several key players, including Jude Bellingham, Marco Reus and Mats Hummels. But they still had enough quality to beat Augsburg. However, they were unable to create enough clear-cut chances and were punished for their wastefulness.
Augsburg, meanwhile, defended resolutely and took their chance when it came. They now have a real chance of staying in the Bundesliga for another season.
