Scotland County Scores Late to Edge Gray's Creek, 23-21
FAYETTEVILLE - The Gray's Creek Bears fell just short of a big road win on Friday night, dropping a 23-21 heartbreaker at Scotland County.
The Bears (1-1) held a 21-14 lead late in the fourth quarter before Scotland County (2-0) rallied for the game-winning touchdown with just over two minutes remaining.
Gray's Creek had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but a 45-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left as time expired.
Bears' Offense Stalls in the Second Half
The Bears' offense, which had been clicking in the first half, sputtered in the second half.
Gray's Creek managed just 60 yards of offense in the second half after gaining 170 yards in the first half.
The Bears also turned the ball over twice in the second half, including a costly fumble that led to Scotland County's game-winning touchdown.
Gray's Creek Defense Plays Well, But Can't Hold On
The Bears' defense played well throughout the game, but couldn't get the key stop when they needed it most.
Scotland County converted a key fourth down late in the fourth quarter to keep its game-winning drive alive.
The Bears also gave up a long touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter that gave Scotland County the lead for good.
Gray's Creek Looks to Rebound Next Week
The Bears will look to rebound next week when they host Hoke County (1-1).
Hoke County is coming off a 35-14 loss to Richmond County.
The Bears will need to play a complete game against Hoke County to get back on track.
