Everton's Mykolenko scores a dramatic late winner

Toffees secure a vital three points against Leicester

Vitalii Mykolenko's 90th-minute goal sealed a vital three points for Everton as they came from behind to beat Leicester 2-1 at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Ukrainian left-back was the unlikely hero as he swept home Demarai Gray's cross to spark wild scenes of celebration in the stands.

It was a just reward for Everton, who had dominated the game for long periods but had found themselves behind to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's opener.

But Frank Lampard's side showed great character to fight back and secure a much-needed victory.

How the match unfolded

Everton started the game brightly and should have taken the lead when Anthony Gordon found himself through on goal, but he fired wide.

Leicester gradually grew into the game and took the lead against the run of play when Dewsbury-Hall fired home from the edge of the area.

Everton responded well to going behind and equalised through Gray just before half-time.

The second half was a more even affair, with both sides having chances to win it.

But it was Everton who eventually found the winning goal, with Mykolenko popping up with a late winner.

Reaction

Lampard was delighted with his team's performance, saying: "I'm really pleased with the character and spirit the players showed today.

"We went behind but we never gave up and we kept fighting until the end.

"This is a big win for us and it's a big step in the right direction."

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers was disappointed with the result, but he praised his team's effort.

"We're disappointed not to get something from the game, but I thought my players gave everything," he said.

"We caused Everton problems, but we just couldn't find the winning goal."

Conclusion

Everton's victory was a vital one in their fight for survival.

The Toffees are now just one point above the relegation zone, but they have a game in hand on their rivals.

Leicester, meanwhile, remain in 12th place and will be disappointed to have missed out on the chance to move into the top half of the table.
