Chelsea Fitness News: Maresca Delivers Positive James & Lavia Update Ahead of Newcastle Clash

Blues assistant boss provides injury update on key duo

Chelsea assistant manager Enzo Maresca has delivered positive injury updates on Reece James and Romeo Lavia ahead of the Blues' Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Saturday.

James and Lavia both missed Chelsea's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace last weekend due to injuries, but Maresca has confirmed that the pair are now back in training and in contention to feature against Newcastle.

James close to return

James, who has been out since September with a knee injury, has been stepping up his recovery in recent weeks and is now close to a return to action.

"Reece is very close," Maresca told the club's official website. "He has been training with the team for the last few days and he is feeling good.

"We will assess him again this week and see if he is ready to play against Newcastle."

Lavia also making progress

Lavia, who has been out since August with a muscle injury, is also making good progress and could be in line to make his Chelsea debut against Newcastle.

"Romeo is also doing very well," Maresca said. "He has been training with the team for the last week and he is getting stronger every day.

"He is not yet ready to start a game, but he could be in contention to come off the bench against Newcastle."
