Borussia Dortmund Maintain Title Hopes with Convincing Win over Augsburg
Dortmund close the gap on Bayern Munich
Der BVB secure a crucial victory in their bid to retain the Bundesliga title
Borussia Dortmund kept their Bundesliga title hopes alive on Saturday with a convincing 4-0 victory over FC Augsburg at the WWK Arena. The win sees Dortmund move to within three points of leaders Bayern Munich, who host VfB Stuttgart on Sunday.
Dortmund were without the suspended Jude Bellingham and the injured Marco Reus, but they still had too much firepower for Augsburg. Giovanni Reyna opened the scoring for the visitors in the 13th minute, before Donyell Malen doubled their lead just before the half-hour mark.
Karim Adeyemi made it 3-0 in the 51st minute, and Youssoufa Moukoko added a fourth in the 72nd minute to complete the rout. The win was Dortmund's third in a row in the Bundesliga, and it keeps them in the hunt for their first title since 2012.
Augsburg's struggles continue
Augsburg, meanwhile, remain in 13th place in the Bundesliga table, just three points above the relegation play-off spot. They have now lost four of their last five league games, and they will need to improve their form if they want to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle.
What's next?
Borussia Dortmund will host Chelsea in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie on Wednesday. Augsburg, meanwhile, will travel to Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
