Bayer miss chance to climb top of Bundesliga after late Werder Bremen equaliser

Hosts were on course to extend unbeaten start after Leon Bailey gave them early lead

But Josh Sargent and Niclas Fuellkrug goals earn visitors share of the spoils

Bayer Leverkusen's chance to go top of the Bundesliga was halted after they were held to a 2-2 draw by Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Leon Bailey fired Leverkusen into a 16th-minute lead following a fine team move that involved Florian Wirtz and Moussa Diaby.

But Bremen deservedly drew level in first-half stoppage time when Josh Sargent fired home from close range after a neat cutback from Anthony Jung.

And Werder Bremen came out strongly in the second half and within two minutes they'd taken the lead for the first time in the game.

Niclas Fuellkrug found Jung down the left and Jung's first time cross found Fuellkrug who directed the ball home.

It was Fuellkrug's fifth goal of the season and took him level with Bayern Munich's Sadio Mane in the scoring charts.

But Bremen were unable to hold on for the win as Leverkusen substitute Amine Adli poked in from close range with 10 minutes to go.

The result means that Leverkusen remain second in the Bundesliga, level on points with leaders Bayern Munich, who beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 on Saturday.

Bremen stay 11th after claiming their third point of the season.
