Atalanta Crushing Verona 6-1 in Italian Match
Vargas shines as Atalanta return to winning ways
Atalanta returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion on Saturday, thrashing Hellas Verona 6-1 at the Gewiss Stadium. A brace from Luis Muriel and goals from Ademola Lookman, Teun Koopmeiners, Rasmus Hojlund, and Ederson sealed the victory for the hosts.
Muriel and Lookman on target
Muriel opened the scoring in the 12th minute, latching on to a pass from Lookman and firing a low shot past Verona goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo. Lookman then doubled Atalanta's lead in the 22nd minute, finishing off a flowing move involving Muriel and Koopmeiners.
Koopmeiners and Hojlund extend lead
Koopmeiners made it 3-0 in the 35th minute, curling a free-kick into the top corner. Hojlund then added a fourth goal just before halftime, tapping in from close range after good work from Muriel and Lookman.
Atalanta add two more after break
Muriel grabbed his second goal of the game in the 57th minute, converting a penalty after he was brought down in the box by Verona defender Isak Hien. Ederson then completed the scoring in the 81st minute, firing home from the edge of the area.
Verona's consolation
Verona's only goal came in the 90th minute, when Thomas Henry headed in from a corner. The goal was little consolation for the visitors, who were outplayed by Atalanta throughout the match.
Atalanta move up to fifth
The victory lifted Atalanta up to fifth place in the Serie A standings, level on points with fourth-placed AS Roma. Verona, meanwhile, remained 19th, just one point above the relegation zone.
